George Blake - Slate & Stone Crafts

George worked 48 years in Delabole slate quarry, Cornwall. He started as a boy apprentice splitting slates by hand, then moving into the mill where they crushed slate into powder, which was then used in lots of industries. Later he became a charge hand and then foreman where he ran the slate splitting department. In later years he worked on engraving name plaques and house numbers until he retired.

Twenty years ago in his spare time, George started making clocks for family and friends. This soon grew into a small business making clocks, barometers, sundials, coasters, key holders and pen sets, all made from Cornish slate, which he sells at craft fairs and shops around Cornwall.
George and his work have appeared on West Country TV and local radio.
